In 2017, Saint John engaged in a program to renovate and replace the source and means of supply of drinking water to the west side of the city. Pursuant to this program, the city changed the source of drinking water supplied to west Saint John from the Spruce Lake Reservoir to a new well source which had a distinct chemistry that was known to the city. This change in water supply and/or water pressure exposed water pipes, appliances, and equipment to that distinct chemistry, causing widespread failure.
