John Henderson grew up on a small dairy farm in Kings County NB. He graduated from Hampton Consolidated High School in 1975 and commenced his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of New Brunswick (Saint John). He joined the Naval Reserve in HMCS BRUNSWICKER in 1976 and served our country in various leadership positions as a Naval Reservist until retiring at rank of Commander in 2006.
John Henderson has worked in the legal field since 1985 when he commenced employment as a paralegal with the firm Barry O’Neil. From 1988 to 1991 he studied law at Ludlow Hall of the University of New Brunswick. After graduating, he articled with the firm Neill Tonning Horgan. He was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in June 1992 and practiced with Neil Tonning Horgan until setting up his own practice in January of 1994. John Henderson practiced law as a sole practitioner until joining Gilbert McGloan Gillis in December, 2017. John Henderson has represented clients in virtually all levels of the courts in New Brunswick. Additionally he has appeared in matters before municipal councils, planning boards and other tribunals. John Henderson maintains a general practice in Saint John which includes: real property matters; criminal law; corporate work for small business; wills and estates; personal injury claims and other litigation matters.
John Henderson is a member of the Saint John Law Society (and a past member of its governing council), the New Brunswick Law Society and the Canadian Bar Association. He is a past president of, and continues to serve on the Executive Committee of, the Nauwigewauk Community Club Inc. He chaired the Hampton Local Service District Advisory Committee from 2009 until 2017 and was a Director on the Board of Regional Service Commission 8. He continues to serve on the Region 8 Human Resources Committee. John Henderson is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Hammond River Angling Association and the Union Club of Saint John. He is also a member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hammond River where he participates in its Holy Joes Society and is a former member of its vestry. He regularly attends services at St Alphonsus Roman Catholic Parish in Hampton. John Henderson joined the Board of Governors of the NB & PEI Division Inc. of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in 2007 and served in various roles with that Board. In 2016 he was elected Chair of the Board of Governors for the Division and represents it nationally as a Director on the National Board of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires.
John and his wife, Nancy Ryan-Henderson, a cooperative education teacher at Simonds High School, reside at Darling’s Island near Saint John. Their children Nell and Byron serve in the Naval Reserve and Royal Canadian Navy respectively.
