Experience

Charles’s primary area of practice is criminal law and litigation, but he is also experienced in administrative, constitutional, aboriginal, and resource law. He is passionate about the law as a systemization of society’s priorities and values, a force that drives all aspects of public life, and a primary means of resolving significant, complex, and troubling issues affecting individuals. Recognizing the central importance of each legal problem to the lives and livelihoods of the people involved, Charles is committed to doing his best work for every client.

Charles is proud of the time he has spent working in several small businesses, and particularly in the forestry industry of Texas. He has worked in elections and in rural economic development, and he has worked with the Urban Aboriginal Knowledge Network’s Atlantic Research Centre on a project focusing on the government of New Brunswick’s constitutional duty to consult Indigenous peoples.

While a law student at UNB, Charles competed in both the Gale Cup and the Harrison Shield moots. And as part of Pro Bono Students of Canada, he worked on a project with the Nature Trust of New Brunswick dealing with various governance and legal issues. Prior to joining the team at Gilbert McGloan Gillis in 2014, Charles worked for three summers in the Office of the Conflict of Interest Commissioner in Fredericton.

On December 6, 2014, Charles began a term as Commissioner on the Saint John Parking and Transit Commissions. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball and spending time with his wife, son, and daughter, especially in the great outdoors.
